The playoff experience usually proves to be quite humbling for even the most talented rookie players, but this does not appear to apply to the newest standout player for San Antonio, Wembanyama who seems to relish the pressure of being in the spotlight; Yankee Scores reports…

Wembanyama became the first-ever NBA player scoring 35+ points in a postseason debut and hitting five or more three-point shots during it. Overall, he posted five rebounds and two blocks along with his points as his shooting stats read 13-for-21 overall and 5-for-6 from the three-point distance.

“It’s good to get this one out of the way,” the Frenchman said. “We just tried to do the things we’ve been doing all year and stay solid.

“There was pressure on us to win the first game, but it wasn’t that much pressure if we just stayed to the plan.”

Neutralizing the Portland Trail Blazers

Overall, Wembanyama scored 35 points, which is a game-high, helping his team earn a 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in the first game of the Western Conference first-round series. The Spurs rookie broke Tim Duncan’s franchise record and posted the most points by a Spur in his playoff debut, setting a new one at 35.

Wembanyama proved his dominance against opponents using different strategies to neutralize him. Over 33 minutes, he scored against eight defenders he had to face during the game.

Defensively, he did not allow the opponent to score even once when he was the defender of Portland. His points were 11.

“I thought he was ready,” San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson said. “There’s an approach that we all have in terms of expectation of a heightened level of preparation, detail, nuance, competitiveness, physicality, everything. There’s a real desire for that young man to participate in that. This was his first playoff game, and he has lofty expectations and goals for himself.”

Rookie Rivalry

The Spurs rookie was superior to a debut by the Trail Blazers’ forward Deni Avdija, who recorded 30 points and became the first in franchise history to do so with 10 rebounds and five assists.
