The San Antonio Spurs are a professional basketball team based in San Antonio, Texas, competing in the NBA’s Western Conference Southwest Division. Founded in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals in the ABA, the franchise relocated and rebranded in 1973 before joining the NBA in 1976.
Known for their iconic silver and black colors, disciplined play, and sustained excellence, the Spurs have won 5 NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) and boast one of the highest winning percentages in league history.

History and Dynasty Eras

The Spurs began as an ABA team and transitioned successfully into the NBA. Early success came with scoring legend George “The Iceman” Gervin, who won multiple scoring titles. The modern dynasty launched with the 1989 draft of David Robinson (“The Admiral”), followed by Tim Duncan in 1997.
The “Twin Towers” duo delivered the franchise’s first title in 1999 under coach Gregg Popovich. The core of Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginóbili — later joined by Kawhi Leonard — powered four more championships. Popovich’s system emphasized defense, fundamentals, and team play, leading to 22 straight playoff appearances (1998–2019).
After a rebuild, the Spurs entered a new era with the 2023 No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama.
