Taylor Fritz ultimately beat Ben Shelton, defeating his fellow American 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-6(3) to reach the Halle quarterfinals, Yankee Scores reports.
The two hour, 49 minute contest was decided exclusively on tiebreaks, with neither man broken once in the match.
World number five Shelton arrived in red hot form, having claimed a Stuttgart title at Fritz’s cost just six days earlier – his first grass victory and third of the season.

He won the first set and had a match point in the second before the ninth-ranked Fritz fought back to force a third set.
Shelton seemed to adjust something physically midway through the third set, dropping to the turf and limping to his chair, but fought to the end. It was Fritz who found another gear in the deciding tiebreak, pulling away to take the win and end a run of misery against his countryman — Shelton having beaten him in finals at both Dallas in February and Stuttgart last weekend.
“Don’t know if I could have taken losing another one of those to Ben,” Fritz confessed afterward, saying that in his two previous defeats he actually had the better opportunities, while this time Shelton had the upper hand for stretches but couldn’t close it out.

Per ATP Tour, It was a serve-dominated affair with Fritz blasting 24 aces and saving all four break points he faced while Shelton smashed 15 aces. Still, in defeat, Shelton’s grass-court breakthrough remains intact going into Wimbledon.
Fritz will play Alexander Zverev for a place in the final.
