A New Era Begins At The Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels have parted ways with general manager Perry Minasian and brought in prominent baseball operations executive John Mozeliak as a consultant to supervise day-to-day operations while the team seeks for a replacement, Yankee Scores reports.

Heading Into Rebuild

The Angels, who are on pace to finish with their 11th straight losing season, fired Minasian in his sixth year as GM and his last under contract.

The move is an indication that the organization is looking for new leadership at a key time, with the MLB Draft set for July 11-12 and the trade deadline coming up on August 3.

Per ESPN, Minasian will be the Angels’ fourth full-time GM since 2012, succeeding Jerry Dipoto and Billy Eppler.

Minasian replaced Eppler after the COVID-19 abbreviated 2020 season and the Angels never had a winning season under him, capped by 77 wins.

Since taking over at the start of 2021, the Angels have the sixth-lowest winning percentage, eighth-fewest runs scored and fifth-highest ERA in the majors, all while owning a farm system that has continuously been rated among the worst in the industry.

Mozeliak Takes the Reins

Mozeliak was GM of the St. Louis Cardinals from 2008 until 2025. He was in charge of Cardinals baseball operations for 18 years and during that time he was part of 10 playoff appearances, six division titles, two pennants and a World Series championship in 2011.

Mozeliak will “oversee the day-to-day baseball operations for the Angels while refining a baseball operations strategy and assisting the organisation in its search for a new general manager,” the Angels announced.” It is likely he will remain with the group until the conclusion of the calendar year.

Mozeliak won’t be tested right away, but he’ll have to decide whether to trade starting pitchers Jose Soriano or Reid Detmers, who both have value and are under team control through 2028.

Superstar Mike Trout, meanwhile, is extremely unlikely to be traded, remaining under contract until 2030 at $37.1 million per year and with a full no-trade provision.

Minasian was credited by first-year Angels president Molly Jolly, who replaced retired longtime executive John Carpino.

“Perry has been a valuable leader who has worked tirelessly the last six years to improve our baseball-operations department,” Jolly said. “I appreciate his dedication, his insight and his many contributions to our organization.”
