Almost bad ending to a good beginning
The 22-year-old southpaw, Seattle’s third overall pick in the 2025 draft, took the mound on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs at T-Mobile Park
Anderson gave up five-plus strong innings, aided by a slick defensive double play that erased a leadoff double
Then the game turned around quickly. Anderson gave up back-to-back homers to end his outing, a disappointing end to an otherwise promising debut.
His manager wanted to let him push through and finish the sixth inning himself
Arozarena to the rescue
But it didn’t matter in the end. Randy Arozarena had already homered once in the game and even robbed a Cubs home run with a leaping catch at the wall.
Then, in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, he homered two runs to send the Mariners to a 5-4 win over the Cubs.
“I thought it was way gone,” Anderson said of Arozarena’s play according to ESPN. “I’m honestly grateful that ball stayed in the park.”
The win is a good one for Mariners as they’re still fighting for playoff spot and it also gave their top pitching prospect a debut to remember
