Formula 1 Heads to Austria With Championship Heating Up

The 2026 Formula 1 World Championship continues this weekend at one of its most popular venues, the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria for Round 8. The race is on Sunday June 28 with lights out at 15:00 local time, with drivers completing 71 laps of the 4.318km circuit – a total racing distance of around 307 kilometres.

Hamilton Comes on a Wave

The Austrian Grand Prix could not have come at a better time for Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton claimed his first grand prix victory for Ferrari in a commanding display at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, becoming the first non-Mercedes driver to win a race this season. He did that with a three-stop strategy that kept Mercedes rival George Russell at bay, while Antonelli, who had passed Russell and looked set for second place, retired with an electrical problem.

Hamilton has been on a bit of a roll over the last three races, posting his best three consecutive results for Ferrari. Earlier this year he took his first podium for the team in China, then Canada delivered his first runner-up finish, matched that in Monaco before the standout drive to take victory in Barcelona.

Title Fight Is Now Real

This championship felt like a formality before Barcelona. Kimi Antonelli had won five races in a row and stretched his lead to Hamilton to 66 points, and looked to be running away with it. The Austrian Grand Prix on June 28 comes in a totally different context.

Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship on 156 points after seven rounds but has seen his lead cut to 41 points over Hamilton. George Russell is also back in the hunt after finishing second in Barcelona, he is 50 points behind his teammate with 106 points overall.

The home race of Red Bull

The 2026 season has been a disaster for Red Bull under the new technical regulations, with the car being uncompetitive in ways the team has not publicly acknowledged in any satisfying detail. Verstappen’s first podium of the season was in Canada, where third felt like a breakthrough. Now they’re back home at their circuit, a track built for Red Bull’s philosophy, and the pressure to perform in front of an orange-clad crowd has never been higher.

What the Record Requires

The Red Bull Ring is one of the most scenic and punishing circuits on the calendar. The 4.318km track is short for F1, set in the hills of Styria, but deceptively demanding with a series of long straights punctuated by heavy braking zones and tight, technical corners.

For the compact Austrian venue, which features mostly low-speed right-handers but is punctuated by two high-speed sequences and several long straights, it is expected to be a test of power and aerodynamic efficiency. There is still a risk of wheel lock-up, especially when exiting Turns 3 and 4. The changes in elevation of the circuit make the braking zones more difficult as well.

Round 8 is here at the heart of the Styrian Hills! 🇦🇹

Tyres and Technology Focus

According to Wikipedia, Pirelli has brought the softest compounds in its range to Austria, with the C3, C4 and C5 tyres – the same allocation that was used at the circuit last season. Tyre prep is expected to be a big factor, especially during qualifying. Austria will also be the first high-altitude test for Formula 1’s new 2026 power units, with turbo response keenly watched by teams as the new generation of engines face thinner air for the first time.

Sunday: What to Expect

Mercedes have won every race before Barcelona and it is worth remembering how good the Silver Arrows have been this season – Ferrari have often been competitive in the early stages of races but faded in the later stages. Barcelona was a change of perception but Austria is the real test of whether Ferrari’s upgrade trajectory is real or situational.

There is rarely a quiet race at the Red Bull Ring, with three DRS zones, a flashpoint at Turn 3 and plenty of gravel waiting at the final corners. Round 8 has all the ingredients for a classic with a suddenly reanimated championship, a resurgent Ferrari and a desperate Verstappen seeking to deliver at home.
