Manchester City believe that Rodri will accept a new deal at the club, but they also expect a bid for him from Real Madrid, as well as from some other clubs too.
His deal expires in next June, and he hasn’t signed City’s latest offer, theguardian reported.
The discussions with the 30-year-old are currently taking place and the club are confident they’ll be successful.
But now Real Madrid have changed their initial policy of not showing any interest in Rodri because of his excellent performance as the captain of Spain’s successful World Cup squad, where he was named as the winner of the Golden Ball award, which recognizes the best player in the tournament.
The consistency of Rodri during the summer has helped to eliminate the doubt about his physical condition after two disappointing seasons for him due to injuries. But now Rodri needs surgery for his back injury after coming back from North America.
In March, Rodri expressed his readiness to play for Real Madrid. “I’ve already played for Atlético [in 2018-19] so this doesn’t prevent me from playing for Real Madrid. There were such players before me. Maybe not direct transfer, but after that period. It’s impossible to say no to one of the best clubs in the world.”
The interest of Real Madrid in Rodri’s signing could be a signal for other top clubs to start the pursuit of him. Barcelona might try to sign him after the injury of Frenkie de Jong, and PSG is known to like Rodri too.
