Thanks to a revolutionary ‘NanoScope’ procedure, Skubal is skipping the grueling arm-rebuilding phase and eyeing a return to dominance. Yankee Scores reports…
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal can make his return ahead of the schedule, according to his agent, Scott Boras.
In the initial report of the need for surgery for the player, some were of the opinion that he could make his return after the mid-season break.
However, during the Baseball Tonight Podcast on ESPN, the representative of the star stated that following the procedure made by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Skubal would not have to work on rebuilding his arm strength, which means his absence will last shorter than usual.
“We think that’s going to be a much shorter period [of rehabilitation],” Boras said. “And he’ll be able to return to performance at just a much, much earlier stage.”
The “Skubal Scope” Advantage
As mentioned by many experts before, when pitchers get their elbows arthroscopically, the period to recovery lasts from two up to three months, and in Skubal’s case, it was stated that the doctor used a special NanoScope during the procedure, which minimizes its invasiveness and reduces the risk.
“This is really almost like receiving a shot,” said Boras, describing the instrument used in the procedure, which he referred to as “a Skubal scope.”
Impact on the Tigers
If everything goes well and without any problems, it means that Skubal will be able to return to pitching soon, and it means that the player will retain the strength acquired from his training throughout the winter and in spring training as well as early in the season.
The clubhouse hopes that he could be back in early June, and for the Tigers, that will be very important since the team has experienced significant losses due to injuries this season.
Tarik Skubal became the winner of the AL Cy Young Award twice – in 2024 and then in 2025, and this season, prior to his injury, he was in great form with 2.70 ERA in seven games played. The problem appeared after Skubal’s game on April 29.
