The Atlanta Falcons have entered a period of quarterback uncertainty as training camp opens, with both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. battling with health issues.
Tagovailoa was released by the Miami Dolphins and signed a one-year deal with Atlanta this summer and has been competing with Penix for the starting role, per ESPN

The veteran quarterback is now dealing with a tight back, which adds a layer of trouble for a Falcons squad that is already coping with a sensitive situation at the position.
Penix is just coming back from the knee injury that interrupted his 2025 season early.
The former first-round choice has progressed in his recuperation, but the Falcons have been careful with his effort.
The Falcons started the offseason expecting a Tagovailoa-Penix duel, but the quarterback war has yet to fully come to fruition since Penix hasn’t been able to practice at the same level.
Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt has previously admitted that a meaningful competition could not commence until Penix was healthy enough to be assessed on a level playing field.
With both quarterbacks now dealing with health issues, Atlanta’s need for experienced depth has become more urgent.
