The Las Vegas Raiders are officially entering a multi-year rebuild. As first reported by Evan Sidery, the team traded five-time Pro Bowler Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens and released veteran quarterback Geno Smith.

Those moves free up more than $120 million in salary cap space, giving the Raiders flexibility to overhaul their roster around No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

The Crosby deal netted Las Vegas two first-round picks, including Baltimore’s No. 14 selection in April’s draft and a 2027 first-rounder. Combined with their own No. 1 overall pick, the Raiders now hold multiple premium assets.

This draft capital underscores the organization’s commitment to building through youth and reshaping the roster for long-term success.

Mendoza Becomes the Focal Point

Mendoza, the highly touted quarterback prospect, is expected to be the centerpiece of the rebuild. Releasing Smith clears the path for Mendoza to step into a leadership role immediately.

With significant cap space and draft assets, the Raiders can surround him with offensive weapons and strengthen the line to accelerate his development.

Defensive Identity Reset

Trading Crosby, one of the league’s most consistent pass rushers, marks a dramatic shift in defensive philosophy. While his production and leadership will be missed, the Raiders now have the resources to rebuild their defense with depth and versatility. The move reflects a broader strategy of aligning roster construction with Mendoza’s timeline.

What’s Next for Las Vegas

The Raiders’ front office faces critical decisions in free agency and the draft. With over $120 million in cap space, they can pursue marquee free agents while leveraging their draft picks to secure foundational pieces. Fans should expect a roster that looks dramatically different by the start of the 2026 season.

This isn’t just a reset—it’s a full-scale rebuild. By trading Crosby and releasing Smith, the Raiders have embraced a long-term vision centered on Fernando Mendoza, signaling a bold new chapter in Las Vegas football.
